MRO & Aftermarket are major global aviation sectors, generating annual revenues of over $100bn usd, with Europe accounting for approximately 30%. Competition has intensified as OEMs have increased their share of aftermarket revenues and airline owned MRO’s have diversified offerings to other airlines. Independent MRO’s have increasingly found themselves 'squeezed' in the middle ground, forcing revised business models and the adoption of new technologies to improve efficiency and service levels. Meanwhile, as airline fleets grew and aircraft became more reliable, the need for scale efficiencies became ever more important as competition, pricing and service level pressures intensified.

Covid has now created major new MRO & Aftermarket challenges, the like of which have not been seen before. OEMs are under huge pressure from falling orders, airlines are suffereing from greatly reduced passenger numbers, with major reproctions throughout. Airline fleet flying hours are much reduced, less attractive aircraft have been parked / or and retired early, and there is a glut of used-serviceable material being employed to reduce fleet maintenance events and costs. The combination of significantly reduced aircraft and powerplant maintenance events and an abundance of surplus material is a major challenge, particularly for smaller independents.

More than ever before, businesses are needing to re-assess their strategies and consider how they can re-position themselves to remain competitive and seize new opportunities.
